Miiverse was a basic social media service built into the Wii U on November 18, 2012, the same day as the console's launch. A web-based portal was launched on April 25, 2013, with a Nintendo 3DS application releasing in a firmware update on December 9, 2013. Its purpose was to discuss games for the systems, with its users being represented by their Mii. Along with short text posts in the vein of Twitter, it also had the ability to both share screenshots of the currently active software and create simple drawings right in the client.

Ultimately, the service shut down on November 7, 2017. Nintendo claims that the reason for the shutdown was due to users moving onto other social media platforms, but many believe that it was shut down due to a lack of moderation. Among other problems such as spambots, lewd or suggestive drawings occasionally appeared when browsing, or in the cases of some games such as Splatoon and Super Smash Bros for Wii U, even during gameplay.

Clones and rehosts of Miiverse have since popped up now and again for either browsers and/or consoles with examples like Closedverse, Rverse, and Juxtaposition.

All Miiverse-format drawings are 1-bit, with a resolution of 490x184.
