Species: kopidodon macrognathus

Kopidodon macrognathus was a squirrel-like Cimolestid mammal that lived in what is now Europe during the Eocene (56 to 33.9 million years ago). Well adapted for scurrying about the trees, it was a primarily herbivorous animal that sported two upper sabertooth-like upper canine teeth for defense. Similar to marsupials, Kopidodon bore larval young the mother would then care for in a pouch. The Messel Pits in Germany preserve several fossils of this animal, right down to the fur.
