Ugly Sonic is a nickname given to the initial character design of Sonic the Hedgehog, as seen in the first trailer from Paramount's movie adaptation, which was first shown on its YouTube channel in 2019 before its immediete removal from the public. Compared to the cartoonish design used for Sonic in most iterations, his design in the trailer is distinguished by a more human-like anatomy, detailed fur, two separate eyes, gloveless hands, and a pair of red Puma sneakers.
During production of the Sonic movie, an attempt was made by its crew to create a realistic look for its titular star much akin to Paramount's own Ninja Turtles movies.
The design was panned and mocked online upon its reveal, both by fans and the wider public for its unfaithfulness and uncanny valley. The backlash resulted in Paramount to delay the film for an April 2020 release, and hire artist Tyson Hesse to redesign Sonic closer to his traditional appearance, of which it was better received. In 2022, a slight variant of the movie's original design appeared as a character in the Disney film, Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers.
