Spike (sometimes referred to as "Spike the Dragon") is one of the major characters in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Spike is a male, "baby" dragon (although more akin to a young adolescent), who acts as Twilight Sparkle's assistant, friend and unofficial younger brother.
Spike is able to magically deliver scrolls to and from Princess Celestia by breathing magical green fire, "burning" the scroll to send, and "burping them up" in a flame when receiving them - the strength and effect of this fire breath varies, shown burning other paper objects and even melting metal. Spike often makes sarcastic quips and ribs other characters, but is well meaning; Spike is also shown as fairly insecure, which comes up in many episodes revolving around him. Spike's identity - his being a dragon living among ponies - his desire to prove himself to Twilight, and his crush on Rarity (and his amusingly slavish devotion to her), are regular features, and even major plot points across the series.
