I thought "a simple candle spell" would be off-limits to kiedran children, as kiedran have no innate magic at all, and need to rely on expensive mana crystals. I wouldn't expect the average kiedran child to learn any magic at all....

There's probably an unspoken "that learn magic at all".

And them being expensive kinda makes being efficient even more important.

I can imagine that testing ability/training with near-empty crystals would be kinda common, to use a crystal completely up before they get thrown out/recycled/eaten/whatever happens when they are used up and no longer of any use
