Since it seems we're on a roll with cleaning up the young tags which have been in such a chaotic state for ages, I figure now's a good time to finally get rid of this eyesore of a tag.

Here's the reasoning:

Problems with teenager

  • Despite what the wiki says, people constantly use this to refer to characters aged 18 and 19, and sometimes get confused or upset by the young tag added via implication (nobody reads wikis)
  • "Teenager" in common parlance (and according to the Dictionary) refers to people of ages up to 19. We're trying to impose a unique definition on the word which suits our needs, but conflicts with the literal definition of the word and how everybody actually uses the word. This seldom, if ever actually works out well for us.
  • The lower end of "teenager" cuts off at 13, which is a very arbitrary number. Characters around this age are almost certainly going to be tagged according to lore knowledge about the character's age rather than visually identifiable information. As a result, teenager (and the tag on the other end of the arbitrary divide, child) is riddled with Tag-What-You-Know-esque lore knowledge tagging. How can you tell if a drawing of a furry character is 12 or 13?? They'll most likely look the same either way. Some people go through puberty at age 11, some don't begin puberty until like 15. The prepubescent 15 year-old is probably going to look younger than the pubescent 11 year-old. Not to mention the fact that females reach pubescence younger than males. The age distinction is arbitrary and useless, and impossible to enforce by TWYS.
  • "Teenager" can't realistically apply to feral characters, since they don't age at the same rate that we humans do. A teenage cat, for example, is actually rather elderly. How is child supposed to work in this dichotomy? If child is everything up to age 13, everything but the most elderly of feral dogs should be tagged as young. It's senseless.
  • People will try to pull the "1000 year-old loli" loophole to avoid tagging teenage-looking characters as such. Not that this ever actually works out, but having tags that refer to specific age ranges only invites this kind of behavior. Because, again, people don't read wikis.
  • Most porn sites have a "teen" category which refers specifically to people ages 18 and 19 (because anything else would be illegal), so we also have porn terminology working against us. Many people are going to come to this site expecting "teenager" to refer to ages 18 and 19 specifically (likely not even realizing that artwork of characters of younger ages is even allowed here) and likely end up confused or upset or both.

In short, this tag sucks. However, what if I told you that there already exists a word which perfectly matches our definition and requires no redefining whatsoever?! It's true! Behold...

Advantages of adolescent

  • According to the Dictionary, adolescence is defined as "the period of life when a child develops into an adult : the period from puberty to maturity terminating legally at the age of majority." According to the local standards of The United States (where e621 is hosted, if that matters), the age of majority is 18. So implicit within this word's definition is the fact that it doesn't apply to anyone over 18. We don't have to worry about 18 and 19 year-olds getting the tag. Anyone (familiar enough with the English language, at least) seeing the name of the tag will automatically understand that it refers to underage characters exclusively. They don't even have to read the wiki to acquire this information. The best tags, least prone to mistagging, provide their exact definition within their own name.
  • The lower end of this range cuts off at puberty. This is much easier to enforce via Tag What You See than an arbitrary age number like 13. It's actually quite easy to tell the difference between someone who has gone through puberty and someone who has not. The body undergoes major transformations through the process of puberty, which we can identify in fictional characters for the purpose of tagging. This puts an end to the lore tagging distinction between child and teenager. If the character has signs of sexual maturity, tag adolescent. If not, tag child. Easy. Simple. Clean. No more worrying about whether the character is 12 or 13 regardless of pubescence. No more prepubescent teenagers slipping through people's blacklists.
  • This allows us to use child for feral characters. Although the word "child" generally refers to humans, there's no reason it can't also be applied to feral characters, plus this gives us the advantage of being able to distinguish young feral characters from baby ferals, which otherwise are just lumped together under the young tag. Before, child just cut off at age 13, which can't possibly be useful for most feral species. Now, it would cut off at puberty (or equivalent for the species), which is actually taggable.
  • Using adolescent will allow child to match its exact definition as well. According to the Dictionary, the first definition of "child" is: "a young person especially between infancy and puberty". Nowhere does the dictionary entry mention the age of 13. That is, yet again, another arbitrary definition imposed by our tagging system which does not coincide with the dictionary definition of the word. Using the definition of "before puberty," however, dovetails perfectly with the definition of adolescent, "after the start of puberty." Likewise, this allows people to actually Tag What They See about a character being prepubescent or not as opposed to Tagging What They Know about whether a character is 12 or 13.
  • Generally, people searching for teenager (or blacklisting young -teenager) are actually looking for characters past the age of puberty. Realistically, they don't care if the character is 12 or 13. Porn of prepubescent characters is far more contentious than porn of sexually mature but still legally underage characters. People simply use teenager because it's the best analogue we have for "sexually mature," but it's imprecise and arbitrary. There is a better way! This change would allow searches and blacklists to be much more precise in identifying sexually mature characters. I believe that this, out of all the other reasons, is the most important one.

I expect people won't know how to use "adolescent" precisely and its distinctions from "teenager." I think that nuance escapes most's English literacy. I don't know if that matters. See: users who've been on e621 for years but are still saying futa when they want gynomorph (note the irony of preferring a less precise, made-up term compared to another, more precise made-up term). I think a lot of users just add tags, don't review their tagging, don't wonder why tags aren't what they entered, and somehow don't see the autocomplete spelling out aliases either. I will concede, though, "adolescent" does seem like a younger age group than saying "teenager," which might move the needle in the right direction somehow.

I feel this change aligns to the realities of how characters get drawn. Doubling down: this change is mostly for staff. I 100% believe people do not take the young suggested age ranges as hard rules. Ain't no one tagging the "13 year old" body shape different from the "12 year old" one, but the elongated, "taller/bigger than a 'child', but not fully developed" body shape would get tagged teenager (-> adolescent). Having said that, I've looked at the teenager tag before, and it was filled with characters that pass for adults. Looking at it now, way too many mistagged children and adults. Still a bad tag. I guess it filters out a lot of definitely younger-than-teenager bipeds and young_feral art. But there is no fixing the poor consistency of the teenager tag. I don't think a name change fixes that. I'm very pessimistic and skeptical here. For that reason, I have nothing to oppose either.

You know what could help even the tiniest bit... Any example thumbnails in the young wikis demonstrating the body shapes we want those body shapes tagged as and some descriptions for what the anatomy for each age range should look like. That would be a start. Young would have the full range + adult, and each of the smaller age ranges should show examples of that range + the age range above and below. None of the young age range wikis provide sufficient tagging guidance (arguably, they provide none at all), with only young giving some guidance (but not enough and questionably true) which was copied from cub that was only added to that wiki mid-2023. Flashback to me complaining in 2018 about how the anthro wiki was completely inadequate for instructing people how to tag our literally second-most used tag. Still is poor IMO, but not as unhelpful as it was.

I fundamentally agree. In spite of this post's tone, I am greatly in favor of renaming tags to more correct or easier to understand names when those names are known. Having said that, I also support changes in the opposite direction that accomplish the same thing: rewriting wikis to more fully embrace what their tag name actually says instead of employing unguessable clauses, inclusions, and exclusions and then saying tHeY dIdN't ReAd ThE wIkI when that inevitably goes awry (even though I say that a lot in my reports lol). We should still expect users to read the wikis for the tags they use, even though we know they won't, so the very least we can do is use better tag names. Ideally, a wiki encompasses what is fully true about its tag name and only clarifies those true things, which sometimes invites carefully explaining how to navigate difficult cases.

  • This allows us to use child for feral characters.

I don't think what the wikis said or what the tags were called was a limiting factor here. People would tag young ferals as cub and call it a done deal most of the time. I hate that what I'm about to suggest is how people learn tags instead of them just reading wikis, but leading by example would go a long way toward getting young ferals tagged as children more often. Just tag a bunch of young ferals with child and the masses who won't click ? but will click child ought to follow. feral young child -human is a lot lighter than it should be.

  • Using adolescent will allow child to match its exact definition as well.

Yeah, if I wasn't being obvious enough, I do not strictly follow our young age group wikis' guidelines... because only naming an age range is insufficient and functionally almost useless beyond what should already be common knowledge. child bipeds have a very consistent look. teenager bipeds simply have more body than children. As an aside, I think it was the consistent look of children in art that people most associated with cub and that was what those people did not want association with.

Yeah, that thing with ferals was inane even if not literally 13 years on a human timescale. In 'dog years', '13' is about 18 months to a year, depending on breed? I mean, come on, that's useless for feral tagging. Changing it to definition where signs of puberty are the delineator is a much more useful way to go about it. It might even have a chance of getting tagged!

Hmm, I've wondered about those popup notifications like for when you create a new tag, use an invalid one, and so on. Seems that first time using some tags ought to show you thumbnails of examples? Or a 1-liner definition showing up when autocompleting? I wonder if that could be done entirely client-side.

There's also teenager_on_younger and teenager_on_young. Do we want to bother keeping these around?

teenager_on_young is inherently useless, as it's identical to young_on_young + teenager, since teenager implies young. Changing it to adolescent wouldn't make it better, so I'd rather get rid of that one entirely. Alias to young_on_young.
Not sure about teenager_on_younger. Still sounds a bit too specific. I think young_on_young + teenager + age_difference will cover that - or add in child, toddler, or baby to specify the other character, or ~baby ~toddler ~child to catch all of them. So even with this one, I'm leaning towards aliasing.

A one-line definition in a popup would be really nice, maybe from hovering over the tag.

This seems to be getting really specific for something incredibly subjective. I don't think we need to collectively and individually determine what each creature's specific stage of life is. Calling all quadruped characters child simply because they have what, bigger feet and eyes? At what point are we going too far trying to determine this stuff.. I'm fine with smaller, larger eyed quads being labeled young, but child, really?

first of all, is that why you downvoted the BUR? because that's totally non sequitur. what does tagging feral characters child have to do with changing the terminology we use for characters from teenager -> adolescent?

second, feral characters can still age, there are ways you can draw characters that are in distinct stages of their youth.

Not sure about teenager_on_younger. Still sounds a bit too specific. I prefer not to Nuke it. yet... But yeah, in 90% of cases when I was dealing with Bloodreaver's BURs and cleanup, it was not much difference in results. There were actual exceptions I found in practice but I'm pretty sure those ended up with more specific tags or were undertagged, anyways. If they got tagged better, then the searchability went up.

I think it should probably go away though, eventually. I'd have to compare results:
-teenager_on_young teenager young_on_young 594
teenager_on_young -teenager -young_on_young 1
teenager_on_young teenager young_on_young 0
teenager_on_young 1
teenager young_on_young 594
Even if it eventually goes away, manually checking will reveal poorly-tagged examples. And done... there was only 1. XD In fact, I think I think this was cleaned up in an earlier project last year...

post #4376243 was not tagged correctly, anyways. Goofy is obviously an adult, regardless of the lore from the show. She is not a teenager, clearly. When alias goes through, those other posts will get changed to adolescent, so not touching them.

Teenager on younger was more what this tag was probably intended for. That is, a specific fetish. Example And yes, I know they're both teenagers by lore. My policy is to rarely 2nd-guess other's judgement on something subjective like that. :/

topic #40210
topic #40207 I'm going to edit or reject my BUR scripts for this topic... This is where the teenager_on_younger tag came from.

Perhaps - but that's a separate issue that can be discussed elsewhere, TBH. This request just deals with renaming the teenager tag to something more accurate, which doesn't even apply to feral characters in the first place.
Do you have any objection to that, or is it only the child/feral issue?

Adolescence starts before becoming a teenager, and it's different for each gender. Teenager is just a hard term for anyone that's in their "teens."

I don't see the correlation between the two, no.

Also most creatures are past adolescence and ready to breed after one year of age. So obviously the term "teenager" wouldn't work for quadrupedal/feral creatures.

I do have a problem with Teenager becoming Adolescence because you did say it would open up opportunities to calling creatures/monsters children. So yeah, I'll stand by the thumbs down.

Which is why it's better to use the term adolescent instead of teenager, hence this BUR to stop using the term teenager in reference to physical maturity.

talentlesshack said:

This is already the case. child is already a tag which this BUR changes nothing about, it will still exist and be used on creatures/monsters/ferals/etc as necessary even if this BUR is rejected. There can be a separate discussion about renaming child to prepubescent in a similar vein to renaming teenager to adolescent, but it wouldn't make sense to leave teenager alone if child were to be changed.

none of these are arguments against changing a tag name to be more accurate when applied to characters of all forms.

it really does not seem like you have any specific problems with this BUR itself, more that you don't like e6's core philosophy of tagging as a whole.

Doesn't teenager_on_teenager imply teenager and need to have that implication changed to "implicate adolescent_on_adolescent -> adolescent"?
Same with implication of young_on_young.
