Reason: These appear to be the same tags, and the toeless_* tags are both more common and have implications set up.

Having a sole doesn't make it not toeless. The toes aren't enclosed, so it's toeless.

After looking at how those tags are used, I must concede that the distinction between toeless_* and open_toe_* is not recognized by most people.

Another thing I noticed is that sandals are often tagged as open_toe_* (technically correct, but they're their own category). Around half of open_toe_footwear was mistagged, similar story with open_toe_heels.

Because of that, I suggest wat8548 to alias every open_toe_* tag to open_toe_(disambiguation) since it's clearly too ambiguous.

Still looking for better tags for toeless shoes with and without sole under toes.

You don't necessarily have to give up on a tag just because it's commonly misapplied. I've been waging war on people who tag pantsless when they mean bottomless more or less since the former tag's inception. I will say that you will probably find it a lonely battle fighting for issues as niche as subtly different styles of shoes, so it's probably only a good idea to persist with this project if you have a personal desire to browse the results.

That's the thing, I don't want to fight a lonely battle. I want to set things up in a way that makes most people realize they're doing something wrong. Wouldn't call the difference between sandals and boots subtle either (they both end up in open toe).
