hmm, maybe both words actually work both ways depending on how they're placed into a sentence
ways of describing the post
"that character is being hung by their wrists" present tense, active
-the active, ongoing process of hanging the character over the pot
"that character was hung by their wrists" past tense, passive
-the character was strung up and just left to hang, the present would then be considered a passive process
"that character is hanging by their wrists" present tense, active
-actively hanging by trying not to get scalded, would be even more true if they were holding the rope instead of tied by their wrists
"that character was left hanging by their wrists" present tense, passive
-"welp, this is my life now..."

afaict suspension, the "hanging_by*" tags, and probably even hanged could be used for/have posts with voluntary/self inflicted hanging
