Freedom Planet is a 2D action platform video game, it features anthropomorphic animal characters with Sega Genesis-era Sonic the Hedgehog-inspired gameplay. The game was created by indie developer GalaxyTrail. The main game designer is Sabrina DiDuro.

Freedom Planet was initially developed as a Sonic fan game, but main game designer Sabrina DiDuro later decided to change character design and settings to give the game its own identity.

Freedom Planet was first released on Windows in 2014, and later on macOS, Linux, Wii U, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch. The game was praised for its gameplay, graphics and music, and has gained a niche fanbase.

Sequel

Freedom Planet 2 was released on September 13th, 2022 for Windows, with versions for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S planned for Summer 2023. The game was developed with a much larger team over the course of nearly 7 years.

Tyson Tan works as FP2's character designer, giving the existing characters new looks as well as introducing many new members to the franchise.

New characters

  • Merga, the Final Ember, a water dragon woman and the sequel's primary antagonist.
  • Sergeant Askal, a hybrid earth dragon and aspin dog serving in the Kingdom of Shang Tu's army.
  • Captain Kalaw, a rufous hornbill man acting as a superhero to the people of Shang Tu.
  • Corazon Tea (aka "Cory"), the older sister of Carol Tea and a flying ace.
  • Aaa, a tarsier mechanic obsessed with machines.
