the fool (tarot)

The Fool is a uniquely unnumbered and very important tarot card, neither a regular suited card nor a trump.
One of the Major Arcana defined in tarot. In typical portrayals, the Fool is a person carrying a bindle, carelessly approaching a cliff's edge, with a small dog following after the fool. In many decks, the Fool is unnumbered so that it may be placed at either the start or the end of the Major Arcana.
In cartomancy, the upright Fool arcanum is interpreted as beginnings, innocence, spontaneity, and a free spirit.
The reversed Fool arcanum is interpreted as holding back, recklessness, and risk-taking.
Outside of cartomancy, playing The Fool allows one to not follow suit or trump (mandatory when unable to follow suit); it usually never wins the trick, but is recovered by its player in exchange for a "blank" card.
The Fool is frequently treated as being unnumbered, being able to simultaneously precede 1 (The Magician) and follow The World (21), similar to Aces in contemporary card games.
