The aspect ratio of an image is the ratio of its width compared to its height. Aspect ratios are expressed with a formula of two numbers separated by a colon (๐•ฉ:๐•ช), with ๐•ฉ representing how may units wide and ๐•ช representing how many units high.

Square

1:1 โ€” The balanced aspect ratio where the width and height are of equal units. What amounts of these units there are doesn't matter, just that they are the same and thus both can be reduced to lowest term of one.

Horizontal

Aspect ratios where the width of the image is greater than the height. (See also widescreen.)

Vertical

Aspect ratios where the height of the image is greater than the width. (See also tall image.)
