gilled mushroom
The most common and recognisable type of fungus, the gilled mushrooms, or Agarics, are those with (lamellae, or "gills") that bear basidia (fertile, spore-producing cells) on the faces of each gill. These are almost always found on the underside of the cap, facing the ground. They come in a variety of colours, and are usually not an edible part of the fungus, even in edible species of mushrooms.
