A Cocktail Dress (sometimes called a party dress) is a semi-formal style of dress usually worn by women going on dates, patronizing clubs and bars, or attending parties. Cocktail dresses are generally fairly tight, and have a knee or mid-thigh length, straight hemline (though there are higher hemlines). Cocktail dresses are often red or black, and can vary in form - some cocktail dresses have straps, while others are strapless; the neckline may show more or less cleavage, and the dress may include vents, cutouts, or slits. Cocktail dresses are often worn with a pair of high heels and a purse.

Not to be confused with Evening Gown a much longer, fancier, formal dress.
