A strong piece of wood or metal with a sharp point on one end, for driving into a surface. Stakes are often used as a markers or supports, such as fence poles or tent pegs.

During certain types of punishment and execution, such as whipping or burning, the condemned are often bound to stakes to restrict their movement. In the case of impalement, the stake is sharpened on both ends, with the upward point driven through the offender's body from below.
