A kobold is part of a race of short, draconic humanoids originating from the pen and paper role-playing game, Dungeons & Dragons.
The kobolds of Dungeons & Dragons were inspired by the kobold sprites of German folklore who were either humanoid or dog-headed goblins that tormented coal miners. Aside from inheriting their association with mining and sporting a small stature, the kobolds of D&D have little in common with the original mythology.
D&D kobolds have gone through different designs with each edition of Dungeons & Dragons, with the 3rd edition being their most well-known incarnation. The furry fandom itself has since then adopted different takes on the design of the kobold species.
Not to be confused with
- dragonborn_(dnd) - Another draconic race from the same franchise as Dungeons & Dragons, the dragonborn are larger, have hair-like "dreadlocks", and tend to be more muscular.
- japanese_kobold - Anthropomorphic canines usually seen in Japanese media. Despite sharing a name, the Japanese iteration of kobolds are derived from the Germanic mythological kobold with dog faces, not the draconic D&D creatures, and so should not be tagged as such.
- kobold_(warcraft) - Another unrelated species that borrowed its name from German folklore, these are anthropomorphic rodents from the Warcraft franchise.
