Rareware (now currently known as Rare) is a British game developer established in the mid 80s. Originally, they produced games for Nintendo, under which they were named "Rareware". Around 2002-2003, they were acquired by Microsoft, and changed their name to Rare. They have garnered critical acclaim for their various games, often platformers, several of which involved anthropomorphic characters. Several of their series in the Nintendo era garnered animated television shows as well as games.
Several key employees have since left and formed their own companies and games, such as Free Radical Design and Playtonic Games, the former creating TimeSplitters and the latter creating Yooka-Laylee.
Due to the vagueness and confusion of the generic "Rare" tag, this copyright tag is used instead.
