For those that have never come across the term before it is just an abbreviation of a slang term designed to make people feel silly by making them ask what it is.
Person A says something about an "Updog"
Person B asks "What is up dog"
Leaving the door open for person A reply with what ever they are currently doing.
ie. "Not much, What's up with you dog"
Mind you in the furry community sometimes your friend isn't a dog but a fox or horse or... a pregnant field mouse :)
