Correct termonolgy would be hir/shi.. though as to where the terms came from.. I personally go by her/she my self for my self and my character.

When in doubt, if they look more masculine, they be a he/him/his and if more feminine she/her(s) unless you are corrected by the person in question, I doubt they will take offense to it, if they do, it's time they change to look as they feel, that simple, hehe
