Description
Study of Miles-DF's style evolution.
miles-df miles-df has evolved through 4 major art styles that I can observe over the years [post him not knowing how the fuck to colour]. The first is during his years when his fox images were going into print. The second and third is during his early FA commission days, and the fourth is his current style.
I actually have no problem with any of them. I like all of them. However, I will still point out stuff because whatever.
His first style was beautiful IMO. It was simplistic in a way but featured colours that went REALLY well together. The anatomy was impeccable. Did not suffer as much from plastic-fur-syndrome. As Bernal taught him tricks (I'm assuming; at least one of Mile's pictures is on SexyFur, many are ClubStripes), he became more aware of it and started adding the Bernal-esque fur highlights to his images which could only improve his art.
Second style varies a bit. He started off in Photoshop. This is when Miles was displaying Bernal-esque color styles in his commissions. During this era, he was most criticized over the style of his faces. I personally liked them. This era [2nd and 3rd style] had the largest style experimentation. The early period of this style is when VagabondBastard VagabondBastard started taking Mile's style. I haven't checked recently to see what they've done with the style, but I will be evaluating their artwork in due time.
Third style is one that merges with the second style. He was working in Photoshop but near the end, slid into SAI. This is his soft-shading phase, where it kind of lacked any hard shadows that are present in the real world. But the colors combined in the artworks kind of make up for that. I could also say this is one of his laziest phases, as some of the art he produced had really subpar shading.
Style four is the style you see now. He's currently working in SAI. Many people criticize it for the plastic-fur-syndrome effect it has. I love it. However, I did notice a few things. The way he shades abdomens makes it look flat in areas, and one could say it has the tendency to look abnormal. Also, as he's progressed in his art, his finger shapes have gone from curved to boxy, which may save time but it also weakens his style because he's defaulting to an easier method. Also, the way he draws feet is awkward. The toes are clenching as though they have three phalanges in one foot (structured like a regular human), but in another foot, it's structured more similarly to a dog (you wouldn't assume they'd be able to clench as the other foot would.) You can see a good example in this image: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/14936755/ One other thing, all of the breasts on his drawings look unnatural now.
All four of these art styles would excel on their own. I don't see his transition from each style as a sign of him improving in artwork. Rather, with experimenting in styles.

MemberIf this is a truthful representation of miles' evolution of style, I'm sad to see his first style was the best :( (Apart from a few detailing errors here and there)

PrivilegedNot a fan of his current style. Everyone looks as if they've taken a bath in liquid silk every day since their birth.

MemberPersonally, I prefer the second style; I do like the first style, but it does look somewhat flat, and his line work has definitely improved. The third style appears to be very similar to the second, but with a bit less shading and contrast. The final is definitely the most... shiny? I completely agree with the plastic fur argument, and while life drawing has taught me that breasts that low are a thing, it does seem to be more Miles' preference.
That being said, this seems to highlight how different styles appeal to different people. Miles' work seems to be very popular, even when his style seems to have taken a turn towards the shiny.
