We've always had the backgrounds as 3D renders for reference and consistency. Earlier on, we would ink and color over them which did make things look nicer but it also took way more time. Eventually, we found that the using the models themselves worked okay enough while saving significant time on our part. For this particular scene, I had to get the exercise equipment models from a different source, hence why they look a bit more out of place.
