Congenital face blindness might explain her difficulties so far in connecting with people. As the face appears to be important in memory, an inability to remember people's faces makes it hard for a person to socialize normally with others or keep track of information about others. I suggest congenital (resulting from abnormal development as one grows up) rather than acquired (something happened that affected the brain) as congenital wouldn't require latent brain damage.
