One thing I don't like is the type of gay guy who's so desperate to prove he's not like other gays, that he might as well be straight. "I'm not some sissy queen, wearing pink and rainbows and watching Drag Race. I don't shove my gayness down your throat. I'm just like a straight guy." It's one thing to be masculine or dominant and gay, it's another thing to be a douche about it.

In all fairness, that exact attitude is what first allowed homosexuality to be accepted by the mainstream in the first place, toxic as it may be. The idea that gay people are just like everyone else and could consistently behave that way went a long way in the beginning.

I understand your point and I respect that conformity is at least partially necessary, however at the end of the day assimilationist diversity is just being the minority version of the majority. I think queer people should be allowed to be themselves be as femme, masc, or androgynous as fits them, and not force it unto others. However, I'm worried that some queer people in an attempt to belong to the crowd are just being asked to be the token queer that doesn't meaningfully challenge the status quo. I know I'm being whiny, it's just every time I look in the news and read about this 'groomer' bullshit that people are pushing, I just think 'What's the point of fitting in with a culture that can never truly be mine?' I don't respect the concept of marriage, because then I have to think about how child marriage is still legal in this country (38 states allow it), and child marriage was legal before interracial and gay marriage was. This country keeps trying to go backwards on human rights. Why assimilate into a culture that doesn't treat you with any respect? Because other countries and cultures are worse? Because this country can get better, even though it keeps trying to backslide? I just feel so tired of this constant culture war we're in.
