I feel it should be said he was separated from his sister since he was little and was raised by the fake Celestiam who murdered Luna knows how many people. So, he learned to not make waves in fear of death. So, nothing really changed in his life since joining huh.

Considering what Spike has gone through a lot of prejudice trauma ever since "Celestia" went rogue. That's like asking Spike to perform a pole vault on the first try, without prepping for it. So asking Spike to man up, is easier said than done. They should be glad that Spike has even lived for as long as he has, up to this point. Let alone of him having those muscles and being as tall as he is.

I’m just hoping we see Spike take a stand for himself somewhere.

If Spike is interested in fact, he should be able to express that to Applebloom without AJ breathing down his neck about it. He should make his feelings clear either way, but Applejack's not helping.

Age doesnt equal attitude. Spike here has grown up alone and an outcast, he's learned to be submissive so as to not incur any wrath.
