Hmmm, I can think of a couple ways this could actually be a thing... mostly around a water-activated polymer containing a bubble of condensed air, maybe gelatin to remain body-safe? Condense about a grape-size amount of air inside some gelatin, let it dry out, then whenever the bead absorbs enough moisture the gelatin softens and allows the air to expand. It would be a tough balance between enough air for a bit of expansion and not so much that it just shatters the bead once depressurized or causes violent expansion in the body...
