    "They" is a pretty old gender neutral pronoun, way older than that one. For some reason some people have decided it can only be used as a plural though, even though that has never been the case and it's always worked as both, and people have always used it as both, even the people that say it can't work like that.

    As so.eone who has english as second language we arebeing thought that they is plural. So its really hard sometimes to use they/them in aingular and I ofte get confused.
