They're supposed to -be- creepy, as in evil bastards. Hence their name "Creepers". That's why Portal Turrets are cute even though they kill you on sight. They just can't help it.

Actually the name Creeper comes from the british word 'creepers' which are a type of vine, hence the creeper's green color. The fact that they are creepy is a coincidence. They are no more creepy than spiders or silverfish.

They are named so for the fact that they have no idle noises, and thus creep up on you.
