As for aliasing, the question is: Will this tag keep happening without the alias?

If it is literally only two or three people doing this than it is probably enough to tell them to please use the proper tag.
No need to waste server resources on something this insignificant.

Unless I'm mistaken, the only server resources that would be used are when someone tries to tag incorrectly.

Probably not, if it is a database in which aliases are stored said database needs to be loaded on the server and run through to see and look if there is an alias or implication existing, adding clutter to the database will increase the time needed to search the DB.

Only if it isn't properly indexed.
And with the number of already extant aliases, it's properly indexed, or you'd never be able to search, or tag anything with reasonable speed.

Fair enough, I considered it at first, but then figured it might cause mis-tags.
I'm fine with that though if it's better.
