A bit late but shouldn't this be treated the same way grumpy_cat was treated? Everyone knows grumpy cat but we somehow decided to alias it to tardar_sauce because it's real name. Same should go with this

That is a good point but I think I would have liked grumpy_cat having been tagged as grumpy_cat for ease of search for new people and google

Same here. I was never onboard on aliasing grumpy_cat to tardar_sauce

I think we should always go with the common name, which we do in most cases. I'm not sure why the outcome was that for tardar_sauce, but most things seem to be done by common name.

I concur.
The more common name should be used, especially if the actual name is as obscure as it is in this case.
According to Google Trends, hardly anyone searches for "Tardar Sauce" and I doubt that most folks even know that name:

This is really the main reason I try for the common name
