Topic: What would you do if you had $1 million?

Posted under Off Topic

Just as the question says. This is after you paid taxes and the total was 1 mill (USD). For me, I'd help out anyone in my fam that is struggling financially, then donate some of it to the small businesses in my town, and then start my own business so I don't end up with empty pockets. How about you guys?

You know you could do all of that for about $30-40k, heck you could do it fancy for $100k.
Whatcha gonna do with the other $900k?

I'd build an underground bunker somewhere deep in the woods, and live there.

Would probably also throw some money at random dumb kickstarter projects.

Hmmm... this may take some thought and I just relized I miss-spelled honeymoon LOL but maybe I would donate about 500k to schools here in Washington a lot dont have feild marching programs which upsets me deeply for obvious reasons and the other 400k get superbowl tickets feidside if the cowboys get to the superbowl again and buy a symphony level Basson since i'm learning Basson actually takeing lessons and getting really good and then maybe adopt a child from the Central African Republic with my BF and raise him in a house here in Washington maybe in Gig Harbor...

I would buy e621 and remove anyone who is creepy, a pathological liar and who constantly misspells the easiest words.

So that means 99% of the site will get banned.

I'd probably donate half of it, use some to help family/friends, and save the rest for myself.

1 million will support you until average life expectancy if you work for most of it, and are frugal.

That being said, for the average person, if handed 1 mil, no, it won't last at all.

Where do you live? Do you not pay taxes? How long is this person going to live?

I live in cali, and Cobra man up there says "buy my parents a house" which is funny if you tell anyone that here cause that would take atleast a quarter of that million anywhere.

Average life expectancy is about 77 years last I heard, you will need to work regardess unless you don't eat or drink.

Lol Cali.
This is post-tax 1 mil according to the original post question (so you got more, 1 mil was the final amount after).
I live in Ohio.

Currently I rent a 1 bedroom apartment, and have a car loan.
Total cost of living including gas(car), car loan, rent, food, phone, and internet: approximately $1500/month, 18,000/yr
Minimum wage job under current conditions is $7.85/hr 30 hrs per week, yearly total pre-tax: 12,246 after taxes(approx. assuming 20% tax rate): 9,800/yr
Leaves a deficit of 8200/yr.
Assuming 18 years old as the minimum age to be talking on these forums, total deficit cost to the average life expectancy(79)(77 male, 81 female): $500,200
Now, that's fairly bare bones living, if I had the 1 mil, I'd probably spend more on food, and take the occasional vacation, but even accounting for that and inflation, I'd be comfortable with a retirement around 60-65.

Edit: As for house, depending on your area, it's fairly easy to keep it under 100k, if you so desire. Hell, there's a few in my brother's fiance's old neighborhood that are around 10k for a 3 bedroom. Bad neighborhood, but shows that there's options.

The sandy beaches of Redondo to the forests of Yosemite National Park. From the calm suburbs to the busy streets of downtown Los Angeles. From the small peaceful towns to the papparazi filled Hollywood. Out here has so much to offer and I recommend anyone to come by for a visit of this wonderful state called California!

Here in Cali, the current minimum wage is $8.00/hr and will increase to $9.00/hr on July 1 and then to $10.10/yr in 2016 due to a recently passed bill. Currently, Cali has one the highest minimum wages in the US

It also has one of the highest average cost of living of any state.
Only beat out by NY, DC, NJ, Connecticut, Alaska(wtf?), and Hawaii.
Ohio's cost of living is actually quite low, nearly 40% lower than Cali, which is surprising considering it's the #7 most populous state.
If you want low cost of living, but don't want to live out in the middle of nowhere, consider Ohio.
Oh, and Ohio has tourist-y stuff too, if you really need it in the state you're living in.

Most banks don't pay out interest on that large of a lump sum in savings.
You'd have to buy CDs, Bonds, or invest in stocks pretty much.
Or open a whole lot of accounts at different banks.

Um what? 1500? I don't care if you did that, it would not be 1500 a month in any apartment here. So I don't know if you live in like the ghetto or something which is falling apartment. And charging you 10$ a month for rent.
Cable phone And Internet is about 400$ here? Verizon bill is over 400?
Gas, water, electricty etc....

I used to live in a 2 bedroom apartment for a few years costing 1500$

So no, you will never live off 1 million. Ever.

I'd certainly ollie the fuck outta here :P

That or have nothing, because gov't would still charge for many things (including IVA - equivalent to taxes but just in name, here's at 16% - tax work product, and many other dumb stuff), specially for having that much...

But if that weren't the case, I'd probably divide it between my brothers (I'm the third of 4) and both my parents. Then I will buy the stuff I ever wanted. But first a home (with all of the services, such as water, electricity and, of course, internet) and a car (even if I don't drive very well).

Buy a piece of land and make a mall or an hotel, or both (inversion, ftw).

Invest on the genetic alteration of DNA research to create dragons

And have this door (or should I say "gate") at my home :3

The cold is a fair point.

We have Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati.
As well as some other mid-sized cities.
If you want attractions/not-nothing, check these:

https://www.cedarpoint.com
http://www.rockhall.com/
http://www.profootballhof.com/default.aspx
http://lolitarestaurant.com/ (Yes, we have an Iron Chef)
http://www.clevelandmetroparks.com/Zoo/Zoo.aspx

Cleveland also has 3 major sports teams, is a major stopping point for concerts, comedy tours etc., and has a thriving night life if you're into the bar/club scene(I'm not so I can't point to any in specific but w/e) and a fairly large craft brewing industry if you're a fan of the beers.

Also some of the best public schools in the country, depending on the neighborhood, if you have/plan to have kids to worry about, as well as some excellent State colleges in OSU and Akron U, plus numerous excellent private colleges, more than I care to list.

As for ocean, we don't have the beaches, but if you like fishing, or boating Lake Erie is excellent for both and without the salt water problems the ocean causes in both activities.

So, yes, cold weather, certainly, but we've definitely got more than nothing.

Edit: Oh, and we don't have giant forest fires, or earthquakes.
In fact, natural disaster is so rare in Ohio that most places don't require renter's insurance.
Occasional flooding if you're low elevation and/or near a river, and the rare tornado are about it.

Where it was raining for me, the rain barely reached an 2 inches and it wasn't continuous. Since we do have mountains and valleys, I can understand why there was some floods, mudslides, and evacuation. Most of the year (in Southern Cali), it's usually a clear 79°F during the day and a clear 63°F at night. So yes, the weather is peachy

I went to LA, got food poisoning, spent the rest of the trip sweaty and miserable.

I went to LA a second time, got heat stroke, spent the rest of the trip sweaty and miserable.

I went to San Diego, and it was hot as shit. Spend the entire trip sweaty and miserable.

A good temperature for me is in the 60s. The only way I would get that in California is if I spent the trip in the fridge.

The funny part is that the fridge I was talking about (i.e. the one in my LA motel room) literally had a temperature of 50.

Compared to LA, where I live is heaven.

And that's saying a lot.

I prefer somewhere in the 70-74 range temperature-wise.
I also prefer colder to warmer, you can always wear more and wrap up in more blankets if it's cold.
If it's hot, there's only so much clothing you can take off.

Rent 560 (two bedroom, only pay electric, nice neighborhood, no crime, decent size, allows pets)
Gas 2.99/gallon on average
no sales tax on anything, state tax very low
statistically safest town in US (featured on big bang theory)

The shitty part:

Absolutely nothing to do
-40F very common
Record holder for greatest temperature change of like 104F in 24 hours

Then just drop them off of huge buildings after filling them with fake blood xD
Or....

Other things...

You mean a Trottla doll?
The lolicon sex doll thing?

How dare you lol at Cali, my good sir! Cali has almost everything. From the snowy mountains of Big Bear, to one of the hottest places in the world known as Death Valley.

California also has a town devoid of all laws. I will go there some day...

Uh what? Why the hell would I leave the best state in the world?
Let alone go to the middle of nowhere in a place that has nothing....?

Los Angeles
San Diego
San Fransisco

You have freezing ass weather and we have perfect weather and next to the ocean.

Florida's better, it's always warm, tropical, sunny, fun to be outdoors, it's got disney land, tons of state parks, its got Universal Studios (islands of adventure as well) its even got cupholders!

I would rather remove my left kidney with a screwdriver than set foot in that state.

Hey...Texas is pretty nice...
The food is quite awesome, and its one of those places where people one the street will tell you good morning and such...not just bums who want five dollars like in California.
I grew up in Los Angeles and lived through the king riots and the earthquakes. Hollywood isn't all it's cracked up to be, go there, I went this year to see family a day after the Grammys when they basically cleaned out Hollywood for the occasion and there were homeless people and trash everywhere. Other than rodeo drive and that small area, its all poverty.
I live in Texas now, and its really nice. We have a lot of jobs in engineering and the oil and gas industry, which pay really well. I mean if you go to college and pursue a useful major (like not art or ethnic studies etc) you're pretty certain to land a good paying job.
The weather in Texas is cool because if you don't like the weather at a certain point, just wait like 15 minutes and it'll change. We don't get all that many twisters unless you are in the middle of the panhandle, but no one really wants to live there, its just fields and plains.
Also what I really like about Texas is that it has a lot of Texas pride, like, a lot of the people in Texas like being in Texas.

You realize California has the original Disneyland and Universal Studios (the actual one where they film stuff) and tons of state parks...right?

I feel like you're talking about Compton. That city has improved drastically over the years even though it's still considered ghetto.

Overall, every place all over the world has its good stuff and bad stuff

Hm... Jag F type for my normal driving, 2015 F-150 quad cab 4X4 for friends or cargo, nice 2 br/2ba house with decent furnishings.. That's up to about $275-280K? Set aside another $10K for a sickening closet of clothes. For future stability, I'd then go to university for a business degree and buy or start a business. $800K or so spent.. Half of that in savings for myself, family or friends, then the other half invested.

Florida LOL
Sorry, I will stick with my Disneyland and CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE annual passes I have, maybe I will go to knotts berry farm, I mean you have that as well, right?

It is only around a five hour drive to Los Vegas from here, same with you to right?

Can't wait to go to the biggest anime convention in the United States located in Los Angeles, 50 miles away. And if they do another equestria LA.

Maybe if it was actually somewhere nice like Hawaii I would agree.
