Topic: Is it possible to search for exact matches with e6’s search feature?

Posted under e621 Tools and Applications

Hi, everyone.

Does anyone know if it's possible to search for exact matches with the search feature? As an example, is it possible to search for exactly the text "Hello Everyone" within comments or forum posts?

Whenever I try it, it seems to match "Hello" OR "Everyone"... any ideas? Or is that not possible?

No, it isn't possible

Okay, Donovan, thanks for letting me know. Do you think that would be a good feature to suggest? If so, I’ll make a formal request in the "Site Bug Reports & Feature Requests" category.

A proper exact text match search would make forum searching way nicer.

It would require an overhaul of how searching works so I'm doubtful anything would happen any time soon

honestly, just being able to search for a single word without it actually searching for every conjugation and spelling variation of a word would be nice sometimes.

I'd agree, but like Donovan said, it'd take an overhaul of how searching is done. Perhaps at some point down the line it'll be good, but I think right now, the priority should be fixing/adjusting what we currently have, before considering adding anything new.

Yeah... that makes sense. It sounds like it would be a lot of work, and I get that it's not a priority right now, but I hope it's revisited at some point.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone! :)

That happening is just how the combined methods of serch (trigram & tsvector) work
I assume they're in use because they vastly outperform the other options
They are also the reason we don't have full matches

trigram docs - code
tsvector/tsquery docs - code

In the meantime, you could simply use Google and search for site:e621.net "<insert comment here>" and it may bring up things that are stored in their index. It's not perfect but it's better than nothing.
