Firefox's mascot is named Kit now. Images with the mascot on the site before were just labelled mozilla_firefox_(character). Does this count as a new mascot or should the name of this tag be updated to like Kit_(firefox)?

Due to how recent this news is, I don't think we should immediately alias away the "Firefox" name since you don't know if this is going to be a major rebranding or a one-time thing.
They haven't even trademarked the new name/look yet and it doesn't appear alongside other mascots that Mozilla has.

Moreover, the page specifically states that "Kit's our new mascot and your new companion...", so it could be interpreted as it being a distinct character/mascot from the Firefox we all know that rests on the logo.
If you really want something official, Foxkeh is the official name for the mascot in Mozilla Japan and seems to be a distinct character from Firefox, see https://foxkeh.com/.

Is Kit the mascot for the Firefox browser specifically or the wider Firefox brand? Most posts with the mozilla_firefox_(character) tag depict the fox in the browser's logo, which could be Kit but could also be a different character. Off the cuff, Kit has a much larger tail than the fox in the browser's logo which could suggest they are intended to be separate characters.
