Topic: Could I inherit an artist tag from an inactive account of the same name?

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

First time forum user here, apologies if I break any rules or posted this in the wrong place

I have a bit of an odd request, and I'd be grateful to hear any thoughts regarding my issue. I'm 'mustard_(welcometothevoid)' here on E621. I started mirroring my art here in 2020 with no issues under the name 'mustard_(artist)'. In 2021 however, there was a sudden art dump under my tag that wasnt my art. This art is supposedly from the user Mustard over on FA: https://www.furaffinity.net/user/mustard

to fix the issue, I was given the tag 'mustard_(welcometothevoid)' (this is technically my name on Furaffinity), while the other mustard got 'mustard_(artist)'

from all that I can tell, this other mustard is entirely inactive on E6/FA/anywhere else for well over 10 years. A singular image was put onto e6 in 2008, and the sudden surge in 2021 are all onion links that don't seem to work, so I really don't know who was the one to even post those, or where the art came from

I say all of this to ask, if there is any way I could inherit the 'mustard_(artist)' tag for myself, as I'm currently a very active artist with more posts. I guess my biggest question about doing so would be what to label the old mustard as- 'mustard_(unactive)'?

Whoever had the tag first should ideally keep it, and since welcometothevoid is aliased to mustard_(artist), that seems like the correct way to go
based on the approval time of topic #28120 (2021-01-10) and the tag addition to post changes #17690 (2021-04-04), you had it first and the post was previously untagged
Seems like no one was consulted when the tags were later switched

huh
does that mean I could/should take over the other mustard tag?

Generally, no. I don't think I have seen a case of tag appropriation before.

Even if we were to "free up" the mustard_(artist) alias, the tag would still be disambiguated since there are multiple artists with that name and it wouldn't be fair to anybody for one to have sole control over the generic mustard_(artist) name.

In your case, it would be more appropriate to be called mustard22 or welcometothevoid, or if it is desired the mustard_(welcometothevoid) tag.
To fix the error, however, it would be best to approach an admin to reverse the damages.

See, that's the thing though, somebody already kicked them out of the tag they had and moved them somewhere else
They had it a full year before it was torn away from them and given to the artist that has it now

This is a case of tag appropriation, thats why it has that alias

Oh dear, even if that is the case, my point still stands in that the ambiguous tag should be disambiguated since the artist "still" uses that alias on their artwork.
Even after they had nuked their content, reposts by commissioners will still point to their abandoned account as the artist.

In principle, I would ask for a disambiguation and keeping with the mustard_(welcometothevoid) tag to avoid any confusion or future problems (e.g., being mistaken for the nuked account, other artists wanting their own tag and using this as a precedence).

A temporary solution just to appease the OP would be to move the "old" Mustard to their own tag (e.g., mustard_(2007)) and then letting this alias stay.
If a problem does appear in the future, then we can readdress it with a disambiguation.
This would of course require a BUR to suggest aliasing the two tags together and convincing the admins to approve it, even with the above circumstances.

yeeaah, that has been my understanding about it

The only reason I opted for the welcometothevoid tag I have now is because I had just started posting here and didnt give it much thought

and I really don't mean to put myself above this other guy, I can live with the current tag, it just always seemed like a mouthful

Hmm, this has come up before and is why I always recommend using a "searchable" (unique) name. It has happened with DNP names, as well. I've seen artists with names that translate to something like "growth" or "drawing" or "wind", written in CJK glyphs. It's best to just avoid.
