See topic #32505, we discussed what to do with both tags but it seems to have slipped through the cracks and forgotten.
We determined that amputated should mean "any character that has just been amputated" with there being a "visible bloody stump" that can "imply severe_wound".
On the other hand, amputee should mean "any character who is left disabled due to having lost body parts in the past - implies disability, not injury."

Ah, in that case the tag needs some serious clean up, because it seems that absolutely nobody is using it that way. In fact I think it should be renamed, because the distinction is not exactly self explanatory from the name alone.

Ah, so amputation is the act, amputated is the direct aftermath, and amputee is the final result?
So I assume you can tag both amputation and amputated (for the same wound)
but can you tag all 3 at once for the same wound? After a character has a limb amputated, do they immediately become an amputee? If not, when?

To answer your question, amputation and amputated can be tagged in the same scene if both the act of it and the subsequent wound can be seen. On the other hand, amputee can only be tagged after the wound has healed over to qualify for the disability tag.
