Topic: Tag alias: amputated -> amputee

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

See topic #32505, we discussed what to do with both tags but it seems to have slipped through the cracks and forgotten.

We determined that amputated should mean "any character that has just been amputated" with there being a "visible bloody stump" that can "imply severe_wound".
On the other hand, amputee should mean "any character who is left disabled due to having lost body parts in the past - implies disability, not injury."

Ah, in that case the tag needs some serious clean up, because it seems that absolutely nobody is using it that way. In fact I think it should be renamed, because the distinction is not exactly self explanatory from the name alone.

Ah, so amputation is the act, amputated is the direct aftermath, and amputee is the final result?
So I assume you can tag both amputation and amputated (for the same wound)
but can you tag all 3 at once for the same wound? After a character has a limb amputated, do they immediately become an amputee? If not, when?

  • amputation - any depiction of the act of any limb, digit, or other major appendage being removed from a character. Implies severe_wound.
  • amputated - any character that has just been amputated, whether or not the limbs are still visible or the act itself has been shown. The focus of the tag is on a character that has just lost a body part - there should be a visible bloody stump or something where it once was. Implies severe_wound.
  • amputee - any character who is left disabled due to having lost body parts in the past - implies disability, not injury.

To answer your question, amputation and amputated can be tagged in the same scene if both the act of it and the subsequent wound can be seen. On the other hand, amputee can only be tagged after the wound has healed over to qualify for the disability tag.

Example Hypothetical Scenarios
  • Scene 1: A field surgeon using a bone saw on a patient, with blood splattering everywhere. The actual contact point between the saw and the limb is obscured, but it is very apparent that they are cutting off something.
  • Scene 2: The same as Scene 1, but you can see the partial amputation by the saw.
  • Scene 3: The same as Scene 1, but you can see the complete amputation by the saw, in this case, an arm stump at the end.
    • This will be tagged as amputation, amputated (for the character's wound), arm_stump (for the specific wound type, to be discussed), and missing_arm (for the absence of an arm).
  • Scene 4: The same as Scene 3, but only the severed arm is visible at the end.
  • Scene 5: A soldier walking around with an actively bleeding and bloodied arm stump.
  • Scene 6: A soldier walking around with a bandaged but still bleeding arm stump.
  • Scene 7: A soldier walking around with a bandaged but non-bleeding stump.
  • Scene 8: A veteran walking around with an exposed but healed arm stump.
