Topic: Need help with tagging

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

I'm new here and wanting to upload my commissioned artwork form Furaffinity. Problem is the tag system on this website is slightly difficult to grasp than FA.

I need a really basic run down on setting tags up. Like artist, character and general etc. I've done one type of tag which is character

Example Char:Darius-hunter

Is artist Art: or artist:?

I've already edit one tag adding my character into the upload.
Only need a basic tutorial nothing major told.

1st, in case you didn't know, the classification is only required the first time.
After that, subsequent additions of the same tag will also show that category.

As for what to type, there's short versions of all categories, but when in doubt you can always spell it all out.
As for the abbreviated versions, you can use art: char: spec: copy: and gen: for artist, character, species, copyright, and general(to remove an incorrect category) respectively.

Welcome to the site! I think this https://e621.net/help/cheatsheet#Tagging will help you with some of the prefix codes for creating character, artist, etc. As a rule of thumb, if the word or name could also be the name of an object, or just a very common name, try to add an underscore and something like _(character) or _(artist) to the end of it as well. It helps things stay distinct instead of getting mixed in with something else.

there is also this https://e621.net/wiki/show?title=e621%3Atagging_checklist which is imperfect but for a basic idea of where to start, it's still helpful.

The other main thing to know, is that all the tags here go by Tag What You See (TWYS for short). Which basically means that all the tagging is based only what is visible in the image. If something is not visible but you still want it to be known, then put it in the description and not the tags. Basically: if it's visible, you can tag it. If it's only known info but not visible in that particular image, then use the description box. This policy takes a little bit of getting used to for some people, but it's critical for keeping search results accurate to what people will see when they're browsing and searching. Only for identifying characters and for identifying artists can you use outside known information that isn't visible in the image.

The only other things is, don't fret too much about tagging everything. If you can tag a lot of the basics, then that's still good. It's not always possible to tag everything, or to know all of the tags for everything. The absolute minimum number of tags for when you upload something is 5, though more than that is always helpful. If you really get stuck on a difficult to tag image (your own, or someone else's) and there's only a few tags you can think of, but you know there's a lot of things that need a tag still in the picture, then you can use the tagme tag. But it gets a bit overused so it's better left for times when it really badly needs a lot of tags you don't happen to know. Anyways, that's most of the basics. Feel free to ask more questions if you need anything. Most of us are nice. lol
