Donovan DMC and SNPtheCat, can you explain the meh votes? This seems pretty cut and dry to me

More than likly because the norm on e621 seems to be that real-life species never refer directly to the animal class(mammal, reptile, amphibian, bird, arthopod, eta.) but rather following more closely to the scientific classification with majority of named species ether implicating to a family or order tag(most domestic animals implicate to genus) first...

also as a aside loon is another name for pants that have sleeves that flare out below the knees which might be a relivant thing to tag.

PS: I will add a number of submissions on the tag look like generic disney toon ducks rather then loons...

The order that loons belong to just contains loons and extinct loons. The next highest taxonomic classification contains several pretty different birds like penguins, pelicans, and albatross. Not super useful for searching.

The 'generic toon ducks' are a specific character Shirley the loon. She doesn't look much like a loon, but to be fair, Babs and Buster Bunny don't really look like rabbits either.

...As I said, loon is the common name for the entire order. We imply that common name directly in that case (e.g. the currently set up implications for penguin -> bird, and stork -> bird, some of the closest relatives to loons).

I've never heard of that in my life, I doubt people are meaning that when they type 'loon' into the tags.

That's a separate issue that is primarily to do with Shirley the Loon being called a loon but looking like a duck. Everything currently tagged as a loon at least looks like a bird so this is irrelevant to this implication.

"Loon" could also refer to a lunatic or crazy person, among other, lesser known, and irrelevant for our purposes things.

Just implying loon directly to bird would be fine, as Pleaseletmein says above. We could just convert it to loon_(bird) if we must, but I'm inclined to think the OP alias to be okay.

Was going to say that but refrained from it, since "Loon" appeared to refer to the bird for most of the first Google results.
On another note, lunatic is an artist tag here for some reason.
