Optimus isn't a particularly uncommon name.
No, but they're absolutely the same person. Promoting an art pack that they participated in under the name "optimus": https://x.com/_TON618_/status/1640120486461063168
I could easily see preferring the other way around though to have a more unique artist tag though. But I've gotten the impression they prefer Optimus cause that's what they're generally credited as when they participate in art packs.

the tag should be optimus_(artist), then.

Why would it? The only obvious tag conflicts are optimus_(bolenski) and optimus_(tesla) and those are already both broken into their own tags.

because that's how tag disambiguation always works, if a name is used in several different instances the name should be disambiguated. only in very rare outliers like mario, do we leave tags without disambiguation.
in this case we have an artist using a name that's fairly common, and is notably the first name of the main character of a multi-billion dollar franchise (a character that does fit our relevancy rules).

Not necessarily, to my knowledge we have no official policy on how disambiguations are to be handled, so it's entirely up to user discretion when they're used. There's no reason it has to be done that way.

I could see this argument more in the days before we had autocomplete on tags, but nowadays there really isn't much excuse for confusing "optimus" with our proper "Optimus_prime" character tag, especially with them being two entirely different types of tags.
The bulk update request #9233 is active.
mass update optimus -> optimus_(artist)
Reason: Optimus is a particularly common name, especially with optimus_prime and the two other names mentioned. I don't think it would be particularly wise to leave it like this.
Next step should be a disambiguation (and an alias after the above alias request is rejected)
alias ton618 -> optimus_(artist) alias optimus -> optimus_(disambiguation) category optimus_(disambiguation) -> invalid
EDIT: The bulk update request #9233 (forum #419194) has been approved by @slyroon.

Even if we completely, 100% disregard Prime, like forget Transformers ever existed, what gives Optimus the artist priority over one of the two Optimus characters to occupy the "main" Optimus tag? You can't even give a "first come first serve" argument because the artist came third.

What would make you think this is getting priority? All of these tags had already been made by people unrelated to any of this, it is just how thing stand currently. I just don't see disambiguation as entirely necessary for such niche tags conflicts.

I had no intention of making that argument, and such an argument would be irrelevant to begin with.

Because if there are multiple artists and/or characters named Optimus, and optimus is a valid tag, people are likely to just tag optimus for them and not look at other tags to see if there's a more correct one (or not know which is the correct one) for the specific character or artist being tagged. Similarly, other people looking at the tags and see the post tagged with optimus aren't likely to think anything's wrong since it looks like a valid tag, even if the tag may be referring to the wrong Optimus. People would have to know ahead of time which specific Optimus the optimus tag refers to, which many people won't, creating confusion and ambiguity when it's tagged for different characters or artists.

a non-disambiguated tag of this sort is exceedingly rare for a reason. only situations where the term is absolutely ubiquitous in its use should such an exception be made.
if we did as much here it would seem like very strange preferential treatment, and it would also just be confusing.
Not all rules are written down. Just saying... It's a bad idea and there's a reason that it's become common for disambiguations to work that way. It feels like this should be obvious from participating in previous disambiguation projects, no offense intended. :(
