Topic: (BUR) Sado/Masochism is the SM of BDSM

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

This BUR request just got a thumbs down and I feel very confused about it.

From the wiki of BDSM:

BDSM is an acronym standing for Bondage, Discipline, Sadism, and Masochism. Discipline was later expanded to refer to acts of domination, and submission.

From the wiki of masochism:

Describes a character deriving pleasure, especially sexual, from pain or humiliation, or a character seeking such abuse. Major component of BDSM.

These implications are needed. I don’t see any situations in which these two tags could be used in a way that excludes BDSM, because they are BDSM.

The sadism tag does have some mistags though. I’ll try to fix these, help would be appreciated.

I've almost never tagged bdsm, as I'm not very familiar with BDSM culture and am not sure what qualifies. I generally just tag bound for bondage stuff. At any rate, I think BDSM is consensual by definition, and sadism (and by extension masochism) are not necessarily, making the implication invalid. Then again, the BDSM wiki claims it can be used for "somewhat non-consensual" situations, whatever that means...

Pretty sure consensual non-consent (rape play) is a form of bdsm: not only that, but a lot of bondage posts, which do imply bdsm, aren’t consensual either.

Check out bdsm rape_play
I think this image is a marvelous example of it. Great dialogue.

As long as the person inflicting pain on the other is on the picture and clearly deriving sexual gratification from it, it should be tagged sadism.

And both should be tagged BDSM.

If people don’t want to see non-consensual BDSM they can simply search bdsm -forced

And if it weren't for the wild mistagging they endure, dominant and submissive should imply it too.

Ideally we should get these cleaned up and implied some day. I think a large part of the reason for their mistagging is due to a bunch of questionable aliases and implications, like it was recently pointed out that big_top_small_bottom is aliased to big_dom_small_sub which implies dominant which probably causes it to be added in a lot of cases where it just doesn't apply. There are several similar situations that probably need to be sorted out before we can really get around to fixing any of those.

As for the current BUR, I don't see why this wouldn't apply. Sadomasochism is a key aspect of the BDSM subculture. I'll leave this one alone for a bit due to all of the neutral votes so that people have time to raise their concerns, but I think this one is kind of a no-brainer.

Also, as OP pointed out, sadism does have some mistags which will need to be cleaned out before this goes through anyway. It seems that some people like to just tag it on any old gore post even if there is no sexual content whatsoever. Also, sadism shouldn't be used for actually killing or maiming characters, even if the killer is getting sexual gratification out of it - that goes more into the territory of snuff instead. That said, sadism only has about a thousand posts, so it shouldn't be a terribly difficult tag project.
