Are there cases where it wouldn't count as a type of magic_wand instead of just a wand?

I didn't realize this was a tag, should probably point there instead then

Maybe aliasing to magic_wand. magical_girl_wand I feel would just be treated as a magic wand for characters wearing a magical_girl_outfit, without any visual consistency for the type of wand itself.

If there's mistags I'll clean them, but I've tried to keep it consistent to the more elaborate and cutesy wands associated with the genre. Also, you can have a wand without the outfit: magical_girl_wand -magical_girl_outfit

Is there a difference between wand and magic_wand other than the second getting hitachi_magic_wand mistags?

Looking at wand -magic_wand... Not really? And magic_wand has a lot of classic magicians wands (the black ones with silver or white tips), which are called 'magic wands' despite being pretty much the only type of wand (besides Hitachi) that isn't considered to be magical. So that tag is bit of a mess. Might just want to get rid of it.

There are some subtypes that seem unique enough to keep, including the magic_girl_wand and star_wand. Could add magician_wand too?

Yeah, I think this would probably be the way to go, there doesn't really seem to be much distinction between wand and magic_wand.
