Topic: RIP visible Twitter likes

Posted under Off Topic

While I definitely get why they would remove the ability to see other user's likes for privacy reasons, it makes it way harder to find new art and artists. Seriously a TON of the art I upload on here is just from looking at the likes of a handful of artists, the "For You" tab is not a satisfactory replacement.

I don't get why they got rid of it entirely, like why not just make it a toggleable privacy option?

not enough developers remaining to program a toggle button.

It was already a toggle for blue users, so the functionality was already there, they removed them entirely, even the ability for people to check likes on individual posts that aren't your own.

too many people getting called out for their likes, probably

"Called out" is... putting it rather lightly. There was a significant userbase that seemed to lack basic human empathy and took great joy in both hounding likes to find things they took moral objection to, and harass others using years-old likes of posts by whatever "unperson" they decided made you evil to like posts from that day, as well as digging through to just to find more people to antagonise.

Really, if the toggle isn't going to be made a general feature, hiding it seems the logical default. Do note you can still see who liked your posts, at least for the time being.

That's not why they were hidden, else it would've been done long ago. Not long ago, Twitter started officially allowing porn, then Elon got noticed liking small penis humiliation porn. All likes went private not long after. If it was about protecting normal users, it would've happened well before now, or at least before allowing porn that people would inevitably want to like.

I, for one, see this as an absolute victory, regardless. The only person your likes should matter to are yourself, and original poster. It also creates a meaningful difference between liking versus reposting.

I thought visible likes was a feature people didn't like.

I think people dislike other people's likes showing up in their feed willy-nilly when what you want to see is just tweets

Users used to get lynched for their likes so this is an absolutely welcome change and a privacy win.

More great news: ๐• just announced that "Bookmarks" will be made public to differentiate from the now functionally equivalent "Like".

I can't wait to see everyone's bookmarks!

Atleast people will not think that i am an furry because i have abandoned twitter account wich the likes are filled to the ceiling with furry arts
And i am not an furry!

Sounds like something a furry would say.

A better win would have been an individual toggle, like we have with favorites
I personally don't care about my twitter likes being private because all I do is like cute art (on my sfw account anyways..)

The funny thing is bookmarks were basically private likes.

Are they not anymore? Edit: just saw a comment on that. Is that just with twitter* or here as well?

Edit 2: wait a second, I'm stupid. I was thinkin of browser bookmarks, not website ones...

*I will never call it by the new name as it's incredibly stupid.

Apparently, it's a mixed bag. As a counterpoint to the privacy concerns, Jollyjack tweeted ๐•ed that he wanted his likes to be public because that was how he showcased other artists' works that he liked and wanted other people to find them.

Repost/drop a comment?

forcing people to retweet rather than like to share stuff they enjoy is going to make scrolling down people's history even more of a mess. it was already annoying that some users had like 80+% of their posts be just random stuff other people said/made.

Has anyone else noticed that the stuff under the "probably spam" fold is almost 100% not spam? At least on smaller threads...

Or my hot take: Twitter is less useful to people trying to get in contact with their audience, now.

Hey, might encourage artists to use an actual gallery site.

On a related note, Connor McGregor also liked a bunch of hardcore gay porn. Picture the same stuff he does for a living, but everyone's pants are off

I'll be surprised if they keep this feature in the long run, part me feels like this is some bizarre marketing scheme to show people how nice private likes are with Twitter Blue. Then in the middle of the night they snatch it away! xD

The day they do that, it's going to be a very entertaining day seeing what politician is into cuck porn. Again.

cuck porn? I'm going to be curious how many end up liking young art.

Well, yes! But one time Ted Cruz accidentally, very publicly, liked cuck porn. It was very funny

Agree that likes being hidden is an overall good thing for the world. An action that protects people from making themselves vulnerable against the internet mob for sure.

I can see how people would prefer it to be an option though
