Topic: [APPROVED] Midair/Suspended_in_midair Cleanup

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

The bulk update request #6560 is active.

remove implication flying_kick (100) -> suspended_in_midair (1569)
remove alias in_air (0) -> suspended_in_midair (1569)
create implication flying_kick (100) -> midair (3300)

Reason: part 2: alias suspended_in_midair -> suspension alias in_air -> midair

For whatever reason, the concept of "midair" was split between these two tags which seem to refer to the same thing per their aliases/implications. However, suspended_in_midair seems to be used almost exclusively in place of suspension in spite of the in_air alias/flying_kick implication. This BUR will shift the alias/implication over to midair instead, which is a much clearer tag name and doesn't seem to be mistagged much. Then I'll alias suspended_in_midair to suspension since that is majorly how the tag is actually being used. Many of the "correct" uses of the current suspended_in_midair are likely due to its alias or implication, but it's overwhelmingly incorrect.

EDIT: The bulk update request #6560 (forum #390835) has been approved by @slyroon.

I don't like reading that, but looking at the actual use we've failed hard. The true midair posts seem like most can easily be scripted out from looking at the thumbnails. The mistags for simple_background without any jumping, falling, etc pose can also be easily scripted out. Which leaves...? I'd have to closely look at the posts.

I've never liked our definition for suspension that requires bondage, because as a legacy tag it didn't cover non-bondage "suspension" and things like suspended_in_midair, tags which didn't exist or weren't presented as alternatives way back when. Now we have the seemingly redundant but much clearer suspension_bondage tag that should entirely absorb the bondage definition from suspension, either through an alias or just officially making suspension the umbrella it seemingly always was, for... bondage + suspended_by_[stuff].

suspension's use and related tags seem to have grown around the understanding of "suspended" instead, simply meaning a character is "hanging (from)" some support such that they would fall if unsupported. "Suspension" doesn't even really mean what we use it for. It's closer to "stopping (something)," particularly preventing a force from realizing its potential (e.g., gravity). It's very abstract and can apply to anything, not just physics.

In my mind, suspended_in_midair is more like the opposite of "suspended," either being completely unsupported (falling), floating, or stopped midair (by the atmosphere or magic, not an object).

Maybe alias suspension to suspended and have that be the umbrella tag for the various suspension/suspended tags? suspended_by would be even more foolproof, but I don't know if the site is ready for that.

Suspended_in_midair should get aliased to midair IMO, but seeing as how users routinely tag it for suspension, we can alias it to that instead. Either way, I think the mixtags this causes should go away when the tag ceases to exist. And like I said, cleanup looks easy enough.

I gave suspended_in_midair a pass and halved the tag. A lot of that was Impi grappling with the idea that a character against a simple background who's not sitting, standing, lying down, etc is not necessarily "midair" either... A pose can just be a pose without gravity. Switched a bunch of posts to midair and no information was lost. I also took the opportunity to populate action_pose and levitation.

Observation: suspended* tags should mostly be reserved for characters held up and dangled in the air by something. If that thing detaches, the character falls. Suspended is generally not appropriate for stand_and_carry_position sex due to the carrying part. Suspended_by_penis still makes sense with grabbing hands providing light support, but the hands should not support most of the suspended character's load, unless the hands are the main point of suspension like lifted_by_tail. Likewise, if the potentially suspended character is holding up their own weight, then they are not suspended but instead hanging_[by/from]_[something].

The leftover is mostly suspension but still isn't perfectly consistent, but aliasing these tags together won't create 1000 mistags of midair or simple background posts.
