Union Jack(jack here not being the masculine given name) is official verbiage, not a nickname like "The Stars and Stripes." Also... the United Kingdom is a commonwealth of many countries, with many flags, not just 1. So this could be an implication but never an alias.

I mentioned this in topic #42199 and that just seemed to be ignored by everybody else. When something has been around for over 400 years, had appeared as the flag or on the flag of countless countries during that time (including the United States) and still holds an official status in other countries today, it transcends simply being "the UK flag."

The "Union Jack" name for the tag would also be inclusive of the version without St. Patrick's Saltire, which was the flag of Great Britain (1606-1801). It would be wrong to call this version the "United Kingdom flag" because it was not the United Kingdom until the union between Great Britain and Ireland - which added the saltire to the flag.

But of course, this alias will just go through anyway.

I mean, I don't think we ought to be tagging other flags that use the Union Jack as a canton or the like as union_jack anyway, that seems like it'd be kind of redundant on top of tagging the actual nation/state/whatever flag.
