Topic: [APPROVED] I will not kiss your fucking flag, a BUR

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

The bulk update request #6307 is active.

remove alias american_flag (1981) -> stars_and_stripes (1)
remove alias uk_flag (0) -> union_jack (430)

Reason: I was considering titling this BUR "It's a grand old flag", but instead I decided to quote E.E. Cummings. Anyway, no other countries have their flags named this way, and it's silly. No one calls it the Stars and Stripes except in poetic contexts, and it makes it harder to search for all the flags.

These would be followed by:
alias stars_and_stripes -> american_flag
alias union_jack -> uk_flag

If you have a name you'd prefer (such as us_flag, united_states_flag, or united_kingdom_flag), that's also acceptable to me, but not these nicknames.

EDIT: The bulk update request #6307 (forum #388013) has been approved by @Rainbow_Dash.

Yeah totally, fuck these tags. Although I'd prefer us_flag to fit with uk.

I would also extend your proposed followups like so:

alias stars_and_stripes -> us_flag alias american_flag -> us_flag alias old_glory -> us_flag alias star-spangled_banner -> us_flag alias union_jack -> uk_flag alias union_flag -> uk_flag alias great_britain_flag -> uk_flag

Well, that's a needlessly aggressive topic name.

Either way, I vaguely remember this being proposed before.
I think that last time, hairs were being split over tagging an actual flag vs some other object (like clothing) having flag pattern.
... let's not do this again. This BUR is fine.

Like I said, it's from an E. E. Cummings poem.

I object to "american flag", America is a continent. Anything else is fine

"American" in this context is almost always understood to refer to things from the United States; no one will be confused about what the "American flag" is unless they're being willfully obtuse. But if a lot of other people really feel strongly about it I guess we can come up with another name.

"Stars and Stripes" is nothing but a nickname, and should be aliased to either us_flag or united_states_flag.

I think union_jack is fine as it is though. It's more than just a nickname, and still receives some usage in the Commonwealth and other former countries of the British Empire. It was the official flag of Canada until 1965 despite gaining independence in the 1800s, numerous countries still use it as part of their flag like Australia, New Zealand or Tuvalu - even Hawaii has the Union Jack in its flag despite no connection to the British.

Just calling it the "UK flag" is very much understating what it is. It's also, technically not even the official flag of the UK, but for all intents and purposes I think we can ignore that as just a silly technicality.

See: Wikipedia actually having an article for both the Union Jack and the flag of the United Kingdom

To put it simply: the flag of the United Kingdom is the Union Jack, but the Union Jack is not always the flag of the United Kingdom. It should be left as it is. This is just giving me flashbacks to the time people were wanting to alias united_kingdom to great_britain for some unknown reason.

If american_flag is truly objectionable I'd prefer united_states_flag to any of the other alternatives.

that depends on what your definition of a continent is, I think most places consider North America and South America to be separate Continents, in the same way Africa is separate from Eurasia.

either way I think in most contexts "American" is used to refer to something that originates from the US.

also, like-- why do I never hear this kinda thing when people talk about Australia? it's never like "oh, that's not the Australian flag; Australia is a continent, that's the flag of the Commonwealth of Australia". is it just because no one cares about Australia? when I say "I have a frend from Austrialia" I'm probably not talking about someone from Papua New Guinea.

I agree with Cloudpie and Vulpes Artifex on this, united_states_flag and united_kingdom_flag seem like the clearest and most consistent version of these tags. Eventually, it would be nice to alias all the other names to these tags, respectively. Keeping in mind that this bur is currently only to remove the specified aliases, additional updates/requests would have to be submitted of course.

American flag is fine. The context is obvious. When someone says American flag, they are not talking about a flag for the American continents (if that even exists?). Same as saying someone is an American.
United Kingdom flag is also fine, just sounds clunky.

Blech. american_flag and united_kingdom_flag don't make sense together either, if you're going for consistency don't use a country name on one and a demonym on the other.

The standard practice is to use the demonym for flag names: german_flag, canadian_flag, japanese_flag, etc. So the logical choice for the flag of the United States is american_flag. The problem is there is no (widely accepted) demonym for the United Kingdom—"British" excludes Northern Ireland. Nevertheless, it doesn't make sense for the tag for the American flag to flout convention just to keep the UK flag company.

that's the UKs fault for not having a collective term for all their stuff, "british" only covers most of what makes up the UK.
