Topic: Drawing tips?

Posted under General

Hi there.

I have not been able to post in like a year, and i am frustrated.

Do you guys have any drawing tips that could help me speed up my process a bit?

I guess... maybe part of it is because I look here for references and ideas, but i end up getting distracted and not doing as much as I hoped.

But outside of that, it can still take me more than 2 weeks to get a project done, at which point I lose inspiration to continue it.

Thanks!

First of all, what’s your drawing look like?

Please don't get all cringe on me here, but this was the last thing I posted a little over a year ago.

I have gotten some extra practice since then, but I am trying to gear myself towards pixel art. Would not like to give up on this story that I had in mind, but again... very slow drawing, so i end up giving up on the same first page

Doesnt look that bad to me, but artists with bigger egos and large groups of fans will immediately see some problems. To start off, the portals in the title don't look good they blend with the background despite being different colors and 1 arm is shorter than the other, it is a very small detail, but this is still something I noticed. further, you need to work on sitting positions, because the way he sits is a bit odd.

Your art is good enough for e621, so youre doing good enough already, but those are the mistakes I noticed while looking at it.

I will tell you a little secret:

Trace, trace fucking lot but never publish your traces, yeah training anotomy or doing on fly is great but keep tracing you will get some good "memory" of some poses and it will influence better your line if you want to copy some style of some artists.

But yeah the cliche: practice, practice, practice and be humble like you are doing here asking to do better but ofc focus on who can give suggestions than "lol you suck, give up"

I think I catn give you much help that I think your style is not of my liking but some weeks try to focus on hands, feets, fingers and toes, draw on various angles, poses, of hands holding geometrical forms, that will help making your art more appealing in most styles and it's a bitch to do it hard because there are way less shortcut than the body, arms, legs, faces...

Edit: Oh yeah about speeding up... practice lol, sometimes you can try drawing some poses you know will be doing a lot like sitting or lying on bed, keep doing sketches with different characters or changing a little but so it doesn't get tedious...

yo, ive actually been doin pixel art for like......i wanna say.. 4 years now???? feel free to hmu if youd like any tips or anythin, absolutely do not mind sharin what ive learned :3c

A friend of mine gave me some good tips.
Quick iterations. So make a lot of sketches even if you dont post them
Extra rough sketches. Focus on the overall shape of the image before focusing on details
Reckless pencil sketches. In your spare time you take a pencil or a pen and try to scribble out a character to get a better idea on shapes. He prefers pencil and pen because he does that faster, but digital works if you prefer
Pencil sketching before finishing digitally if that makes things faster for you

Lean into things HARD. Just general drawing advice and not related to speed. Focus on and exaggerate stuff to make it seem more impactful.

Let me tell you my autistic ways: Get a fixation with something you enjoy to draw; draw it until you get tired of it without caring if the result will be liked by everyone.
Seeing reactions is cool, but this is not the best site to get the reactions you may want, search for a more positive/supportive community if negative comments affects you.

Have u ever done tests for ADHD? I've been in the same situation as you. After years frustration I was tested for ADHD and boom, thats it. Knowledge about how the brain works and ADHD medications are changing the rules of the game, mind focused on works of art. Im lil drawing machine now. Hope it might help you. Good luck!
