Topic: What is the purpose of the 'Repopulated one old tag:' message?

Posted under General

I keep seeing this when I tag characters/correct character tags in images and without the ability to see the past history of usage for said tags, what use is it?

To make awareness that the tag was used in the past
And if you think you can't see the "history of usage" thats not true because you can search for removed/added tags here: https://e621.net/post_versions
Or if you didn't find anything maybe the posts were deleted then you try search for status:deleted and the tag you want to try see

Ahhh, I didn't know how to do that and hadn't found any leads in the wiki, thank you very much!

It's also a known bug that this message appears when creating a new prefixed tag (e.g. artist:whateverartistname), even if the tag has never been used before.

I haven't actually done a code analysis so I can't be certain why this is happening, but I presume adding the prefix creates an entry in the tag database prior to adding it to the post and having 0 posts counts as "repopulating" it.

The ridiculous thing about this is that, if the tag actually has been used before, the prefix-adding will fail.

Oh! Wow, thank you! That's exactly what's happening as I frequently use prefixing. Maybe that's why nothing shows up in the 'post versions' search?
Although, shouldn't I still be able to get a post to appear in that search-engine if I put the tag in question under 'final tags'?
Because it's not doing that, no matter what singular options I try. It's not like it's on a first upload either, so there is more than one post-version for the post.

I mean, that's a little more understandable I guess, as they disabled changing existing tags using prefixes when they introduced the tag-editing page.
Prevents tag-type wars from breaking out as easily, maybe? I found it annoying at first, but I've adapted.

"Final tags" means posts that are currently tagged with that tag. It doesn't search post versions. I'm honestly not sure what you're trying to do here - if the tag's never been used before, then it's never been used before.
