Topic: [APPROVED] Loon / Diver ambiguity BUR

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

The bulk update request #4056 is active.

create alias diver (8) -> diver_(disambiguation) (67)
create alias diver_(bird) (0) -> loon (134)
create alias gaviid (8) -> loon (134)

Reason: As suggested by Strikerman in topic #35280. The term "diver" can refer to a couple things:

  • People engaged in the activity of diving underwater, usually indicated by scuba_diver.
  • The British/Irish English name for birds in the Gaviidae family. These birds are currently tagged as loon, the US/Canadian English name.

There are many posts in the current diver tag that could be tagged as scuba_diver, and several posts that don't depict diving at all that are tagged as diver nonetheless. In reference to birds, the diver_(bird) tag hasn't previously been used but aliasing the tag was suggested by Strikerman. I think this alias will help guide people more familiar with the British English term to the right place, should they ever need to search for it.

The alias from gaviid to loon is also included here because all birds in that family share the common name "loon", leaving no reason to keep the family name around.

EDIT: The bulk update request #4056 (forum #356577) has been approved by @slyroon.

I don't think there's anything like this tagged diver right now, but: another possible use is when somebody jumps off of a board over a swimming pool, like these:

Some of these are currently tagged with diving_board, and some are tagged with jumping.

Rather than tagging these with diver, I would suggest tagging them with diving, since "diver" in the usual sense suggests being submerged underwater with the intent to swim deeper, while these show characters in midair leaping from a high point. I guess what I'm trying to say it's the act of diving itself that should be tagged, rather than the occupation of being a diver.

In that sense, skydiving is essentially the same thing as diving, just from a much, much higher point than a diving board.
