Topic: Tag Alias: hand_gun -> handgun

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

I was thinking about aliasing handgun -> pistol since a bunch of people use handgun as a synonym for pistol.

But by the definition of the word handgun its any gun that can be held by your hands, varying from low caliber pistols to high caliber rifles.

While we are here we can implicate handgun -> gun

Depending on who you ask, revolvers are handguns, not pistols, but an automatic is both. That's not universally agreed upon, though. Aliasing it the other way would be better, but I don't think an alias is needed at all. Handguns are weapons designed to be fired in one hand. You're thinking of small arms.

In forum #148728 I suggested this:

It seemed to make the most sense based on what was used as tags here. Anything ambiguous between pistol and revolver could be left at handgun or given a new tag if there's a need.

For the purposes of tagging, I think it would make sense to refer to automatic handguns as pistols, to make it easier to distinguish them from revolvers while searching. I'm not sure if that's a good idea or not though.

Edit: It's also worth mentioning that there are revolver-action long arms.

Sorry to possibly throw another wrench into this machine, but what about handcannon?

(Which, for whatever reason, my phone thinks should be handbanging)

handcannon - 0 posts
hand_cannon - 8 posts (1 deleted), none look like hand cannons unless I have the wrong definition.

(Mine marks handbanging red and tells me it should be handbagging)

Almost all of those look like giant or steampunk revolvers

I believe the standard hand-cannon is a one-handed gun that looks sort of like a revolver, but fires larger shots.

...That being said, I remember Dungeon Fighter Online (a game that's been discontinued, unfortunately) had "Hand canons" for the gunslinger which were basically a short cannon barrel attached to a full-hand trigger.

I only asked because handcannon is what Destiny calls it's class of pistols, they're supposed go be super sized, high powered revolvers. Like Desert Eagle and bigger kinda things. I figured that the word might be becoming a bit more popular because if the game, but perhaps not.

Actually, the term existed before Destiny, and it has the same usage.

Relevant

Destiny's hand cannons are a fictional design though. They don't actually have revolving chambers. But, since they're clearly based on revolvers, I think that's what they should be tagged with.

Fictional weapons make this a lot harder to fix...

Oh, I know or existed before Destiny, I was just thinking that it might become more popular now that a AAA title is using the term, however poorly received it might have been.
