Topic: which version of artwork to upload?

Posted under Art Talk

Found two versions of an artwork (same height and width):

(rating: Explicit)
(titled: "射了,换人"
translates to "Shot, Substitution" OR "Shoot, replace."

1) larger filesize, but slightly censored version at pixiv
https://www.pixiv.net/en/artworks/73129126

"2,356.97 KB (2,413,542 bytes)"
(3,177px × 3,050px)

***

2) smaller filesize, but UNcensored at twitter
https://twitter.com/_FiooI/status/1094939698496061440

"684.53 KB (700,954 bytes)"
(3,177px × 3,050px)

***
I'm guessing the largerfile size is probably the one to upload to e621 (the censor bars annoy me though).

(I looked for guidance at the main links at e621's Upload page, and the mentions of censored versions didn't seem applicable in this case)

Updated

AFAIK, the higher quality (less compressed) version is preferred, and it's also fine the post official uncensored versions. In this case since the censored one is less compressed, and the uncensored one is official but more compressed, I think it's fine to post both (setting one as the parent of the other).

Upload both, make one a child of the other.

Order of importance as I understand it:

  • Image size (this is the resolution, 3,177 x 3,050 here)
  • Image type (PNG is preferable to JPG, but both are JPG)
  • Variations (Censored vs Uncensored, they're different, upload both)
  • File size, go for the smaller if everything else is identical.

Sometimes a smaller filesize means it has been compressed poorly, so do watch out for that, but if their appearance is identical, no extra artifacts or anything, smaller file sizes are easier on the server and the user.

That's a bit more complicated. Smaller lossless (or less compressed) versions may be preferred over larger lossy versions, within some range. For instance, a 2000x1000 PNG may be preferred over a 2048x1024 JPG, but a 4096x4096 JPG may be preferred over a 1000x1000 PNG. There's no clear point where a larger resolution JPG will be preferred over a lower resolution PNG (or less compressed JPG).

This assumes that resolution reduction in itself is a lossless action, which it clearly is not. Any non-integer scale factor will remove so much information from the original image that you might as well have converted it to JPEG anyway.

Hmm, don't censored and uncensored versions get posted as if entirely separate images (but child/parent), and thus any dupe rules do not apply?
