Topic: Can we create a new subspecies for the Mario Sunshine Boo, and create a Super_Mario_Sunshine tag?

Posted under General

Hi, can we add a Super_Mario_Sunshine tag that also implies Mario_Bros?
The reason I think this would be nice is because there is one popular character that specifically originated from Sunshine, and several species and enemies that specifically only appear in the Mario Franchise in Super Mario Sunshine. Having a Super_Mario_Sunshine tag would make searching for those characters easier, especially if you know what game they're from but not what their species is called.

So first off we have Petey Piranha
https://e621.net/posts?tags=petey_piranha
He's a boss that first appeared as a new Pirannha Plant species and boss in Super Mario Sunshine

Secondly we have the Piantas
https://e621.net/posts?tags=pianta
These are the native people of Isle Delfino, they first appeared in Super Mario Sunshine and since generally only make appearances in the background of Sunshine themed levels in Mario Spin-off sports games.

Thirdly we have Nokis
https://e621.net/posts?tags=noki
These are also residents of Isle Delfino. Sure there aren't a lot of images on this tag, but you might as well throw in an implication for the sake of accuracy.

Then we have the character f.l.u.d.d.
https://e621.net/posts?tags=f.l.u.d.d.
This was a main character in Sunshine and has not appeared in other mario games since (to my knowledge).

I would like these character to have the Super_Mario_Sunshine tag added to them by implication.

Could we maybe create a subspecies for this particular Mario Bros ghost enemy?

Right now that enemy is tagged as boo_(mario), but I would like to make this a subspecies of that enemy.
The boos in Super Mario Sunshine all have sleepy eyes, they drool, they're often either pink or red and they have two buckteeth instead of sharp fangs like regular boos. These enemies ONLY appear in Super Mario Sunshine and no other game in the franchise. They are also fairly popular in fanart, mainly due to one memetic image featuring them having given them a lot of popularity

I would suggest calling them sleepy_boo_(mario) with a boo_(mario) and super_mario_sunshine implication.
These boos are only referred to as boos or ghosts in the game, but it is also the theme of the game that all enemies are similar to regular Mario Enemies but also slightly different as they are new species with some relation. Calling them sleepy boos is descriptive and memorable enough that I think it would make searching for them easier.

1000% agree, i even like the suggested "sleepy boo" tag since, even though they don't have an official name beyond just boo, this very specific sms boo varient is pretty much the closest thing to an official name for these guys

by the way, i just gotta say: i never even knew these fuckers existed! i always thought that jaquin was just doing a cute stylized boo for that comic

(for the record i have played super mario sunshine, i just never gotten far enough to get to whatever stage they appear on and also somehow i never saw any mention of these guys in online discussion prior to this post)

They're the red Boos in the hotel that turn into platforms when you shoot them, and the white boos in the same level that are either sleeping in the vents or assisting King Boo in the boss fight.

The red ones that form platforms are named Boo Block, the white ones sleeping the vents are Sleepy Boo, and the ones accompanying King Boo are unnamed.
Of note, the boos in the vent have different facial expressions than the other two, so Sleepy Boo does not make sense for Dripen's example of one.

A common conception is that they are stoned, as seen in Yoshimister's post #2552723, but it could also be seen as a number of other things, so sunshine boo makes the most sense.

Do those names come from the game files? I really don't recall seeing them anywhere in the game. (Not calling you a liar, just curious).
I think calling them sleepy boo would be memorable and catchy, but I'm not hard set on this so I'd be perfectly fine naming them sunshine_boo instead.

As far as I'm aware, all official sources refer to the white ones as just "Boos". The pink ones are Pink Boos, or Boo Blocks.

Fair enough. Then maybe sunshine_boo or block_boo?
I think calling them pink_boo would cause some confusion with the ones who are white in color and I really don't think they need to be separated into yet another subspecies since they are identical in everything but the color.

remove alias super_mario_sunshine (289) -> mario_bros (38693)
remove alias mario_sunshine (0) -> mario_bros (38693)
remove implication f.l.u.d.d. (60) -> mario_bros (38693)

Reason: Odyssey and galaxy have their own tags, sunshine should too. I agree with the above. It has tons of distinctive characters, locations, and a distinct visual style and overall vibe.
The original alias was made with no discussion, btw

I held off on piantas and petey piranha because they have had somewhat significant appearances outside of Sunshine. But they did both originate from Sunshine ๐Ÿค” It's sort of like rosalina_(mario)'s situation I suppose, and she implies mario galaxy despite appearing in other games after, so maybe these guys should too? Idk.
The "sleepy boos" are currently tagged as boo_(super_mario_sunshine). Is that the best name, do you guys think? I'll add it to the BUR if so, or whatever other name is chosen.
There are likely more things that should imply sunshine! It's just late and I'm sleepy. This is just a start, more can be added later.

After:
alias mario_sunshine -> super_mario_sunshine
imply super_mario_sunshine -> mario_bros
imply f.l.u.d.d. -> super_mario_sunshine
imply noki_(mario) -> super_mario_sunshine

Any thoughts on piantas and petey pirhana? and the boos?

There's also cataquacks (wiki link) which originated in Sunshine but appeared in Galaxy as well and gooper_blooper (wiki link) which originated in Sunshine but appeared in Super Princess Peach as well. Both appeared in spinoffs like mario kart too but so did Rosalina and she implies galaxy so I assume spinoffs don't count?

Bumping because super_mario_sunshine still doesn't imply mario_bros.

I added the boos to the BUR as well. They were called "sleepy boos" in the prima strategy guide, and that's what the mario wiki calls them as well.

I'm just going to point out that we do not have a tag for the species of koopa that Bowser, Junior and the Koopalings belong to.

https://www.mariowiki.com/Koopa_(Bowser%27s_species) Canonically they're called koopas, but so are various enemies that look very different to them like koopa troopas https://www.mariowiki.com/Koopa_(species)

We could perhaps go with the same solution as the mario wiki and use koopa_(bowser's_species)? But it is kind of a weird tag name for e6

it is a bit of a mouthful, yeah.

what about, in lieu of an official name, we use something like royal_koopa, since it's the species that the Koopa royal family belongs to, or maybe dragon_koopa, since they kinda have some draconic traits?

What about just bowser's_species? It matches yoda's_species

I took out these two to avoid confusion between any sleepy boo and those from Sunshine

  • alias boo_(super_mario_sunshine) -> sleepy_boo
  • implicate sleepy_boo -> super_mario_sunshine

I also changed the sand_bird tag into sand_bird_(mario) again to avoid confusion.

Would sleepy_boo_(super_mario_sunshine) work?

Yes, I went ahead and did the alias.

  • boo_(super_mario_sunshine) -> sleepy_boo_(super_mario_sunshine)

Thanks for your diligence, Cloudpie.
