Topic: BURry flexible spines

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

The bulk update request #2648 is pending approval.

remove alias contortion (0) -> flexible (9928)
remove alias contortionist (0) -> flexible (9928)

Reason:
Contortion should implicate flexible instead, keeping the separation

My intention is to suggest the following BUR if the unalias are accepted:

alias contortionism -> contortion
alias contortionist -> contortion
implicate contortion -> flexible
implicate backbend -> flexible
implicate legs_behind_head -> frontbend
implicate frontbend -> flexible
implicate back_twist -> flexible

Quoting one reply that explained it better than I did:

Contortion is a subcategory of flexible, not the same thing. The definition of contortion is an athletic discipline to specifically increase and gain muscular control of the body's potential for range of motion beyond normal limits imposed by lack of athleticism, age, strength and limited muscle memory. This is accomplished through static and active stretching and the support of strength training (similar to active stretching).

Contortionist level flexibility is not usually accomplished by normal athletes unless the athlete trains similar to a contortionist. Flexibility is not the same as contortion because it includes mid level flexibility while contortionism is more specifically referring to extreme levels of flexibility.

Frontbend in itself is a complicated one because the extreme is not far beyond what's considered just athletic, unless it's going into fantasy or clipping through oneself, because the organs tend to get in the way.

Back twist is a position where a character's spine is rotated along its own axis, usually past 90° and approaching 180°. Currently the tag is not used much, but multiple instances exist and I'd be willing to go around tagging it.

Makes sense. An implication from Contortion to Flexible should work, but Flexible covers things as light as just doing the splits, while Contortionism involves bending beyond the norm.

I agree that contortion needs to be separated from flexible.

Please separate the contortion tag from the flexible tag, they are not equivalent.

implicate contortion -> flexible
alias contortionism -> contortion
alias contortionist -> contortion
implicate backbend -> contortion
implicate legs_behind_head -> frontbend
implicate frontbend -> contortion
implicate back_twist -> contortion

I agree with most of these but I believe backbend should implicate flexible instead of contortion because backbends can be mild or extreme. An extreme backbend implicates flexible and contortion while a mild backbend only implicates flexible.

Also, frontbend is a tough one to define because people use the same term for many things. It can mean hip rotation to get your leg behind your head which is usually contortion, it can mean a glute/hamstring stretch, it can also mean a torso curl or "frontbend". Frontbend should implicate flexible in all cases but it should only co-exist with contortion in extreme cases. Similar to backbend.

You could also argue that a less severe back_twist may not be contortion per say but just flexible if it's a mild back twist. However, this one falls mostly in the contortion category so that's more difficult.

implicate contortion -> flexible
alias contortionism -> contortion
alias contortionist -> contortion
implicate backbend -> flexible
implicate legs_behind_head -> frontbend
implicate frontbend -> flexible
implicate back_twist -> flexible

This might be more appropriate.

Definitely agree with all said here, and indeed that suggestion looks more appropriate in my eyes as well, I'll probably start from there if and when the unalias is approved
